No, we aren't asking you to dig another metro station; we have something far more interesting in mind.
Budapest might not be known for an extensive cavern system with miles of mazes protruding far beyond its boundaries, but it doesn't mean such a thing does not exist. You just have to dig a little deeper — this time, the pun was intended.
Beneath the hills of Buda lies the Pál‑völgyi Cave, the longest cave system in Hungary. Although it stretches as far as 30 kilometers, only a 500-meter section is open to the public. Discovered in 1904 and welcoming visitors since 1919, this subterranean labyrinth dazzles with dripstone formations, glittering calcite crystals, dramatic level changes, and ancient shell fossils embedded in stone.
